Presence

A gradual practice for Presence, Focus, and Stillness

Our potential is far greater than we realize. Yet our thoughts, habits, and self-imposed limitations can create inner tension that clouds awareness, weakens concentration, and pulls us away from the present moment. We spend so much energy resisting what is, replaying what was, or worrying about what might be that there is little room to simply be here.

Kriya Yoga offers a practical way back. Through simple practices involving the body, breath, and awareness, we begin to quiet some of that mental noise and strengthen our ability to notice what is happening within us without immediately being carried away by it. Thoughts, emotions, and sensations still arise, but we can learn to observe them more like clouds passing through the sky — present, but not in control.

I first learned these practices more than twenty years ago through my training and certification with the Bihar School of Yoga. Years later, during COVID and the return to everyday life, I found myself drawn back to them as I navigated an unusually complex and uncertain time. The lessons that follow distill those teachings into simple, approachable practices without simplifying the tradition itself. They work with the body, mind, and breath as an interconnected system, developing awareness patiently and methodically.

As awareness sharpens, concentration becomes easier. We begin to recognize our patterns more clearly, loosen our grip on the things we cannot control, and free up energy for what actually matters. Over time, you may notice greater focus, patience, calm, or simply the feeling of being more present in your own life.

True learning comes through experience. Move through the lessons in order and at your own pace. Stay with each practice until it feels complete, and trust that you will know when it is time to continue. Let understanding come through the body first; the mind can follow.

May you enjoy the journey.
