Find Stillness

Preparing the Body for Stillness

Before asking the mind to become still, it helps to create the conditions that make stillness possible.

Lesson One begins with the body, the breath, and the tension we carry without always realizing it. A stiff body continually asks for our attention. A shallow breath can leave us feeling unsettled. Tension held throughout the body makes it harder to rest our awareness in one place.

So rather than beginning by trying to force the mind to become quiet, we start somewhere more tangible. Through three simple practices, you'll prepare the body to sit more comfortably, explore the full movement of the breath, and learn to recognize the difference between holding tension and letting it go. As the body settles and the breath becomes steadier, the mind often follows. Thoughts will still come and go, but we can begin to notice them without being carried away by every one — more like watching clouds move through the sky.

This is the beginning of concentration: not forcing the mind into silence, but learning how to return to the present moment again and again.
